What is Instagram Engagement? + How you can improve this.
Engagement: it’s a term used many times in the online world. It officially belongs to the social media jargon. But what does it exactly entail? I’ll explain it to you in this blog.
What is engagement?
Engagement is similar to interaction. This is the key element of engagement on social media: interacting with your followers. You can see this interaction by likes, comments, shares and saves.
Why is engagement important?
Many Instagram users have the goal of growing a large following. However, wouldn’t be more interesting when your following wants to engage with your business? That’s everything what engagement is about. Your engagement rate displays how well your content is received by our following. Is your engagement rate low? Try out some new content. In the end, it is all about interacting with your target audience, so your target audience turn into clients.
Engagement > Large following
Your following is extremely important. This group of people is already actively interacting with you, and therefore a warm lead. Way more interesting than a big group of people who do not follow you yet, and therefore do not interact with you.
Maybe you find it difficult to grasp. Here is an example: It’s your birthday, and you decide to organize a party. Many people came to your party, but the atmosphere is terrible. Nobody is having fun, nobody is talking to each other, and your birthday cake looks exactly the same how you bought it in the store: untouched.
Was your birthday party a success? Yes: many people came to your party. However, did everybody have fun? And did it feel like a fun party?
It is super important to focus on the following you already have. Do this by creating killer-content for them, and convert them to clients.
How can you measure engagement? - Engagement Rate
You can measure engagement per post, or for your entire profile. The measure we are using is called Engagement Rate.
To measure your engagement rate for a post, you do the following: Sum all the likes, comments and saves, and divide this number by the number of followers you have. Multiply the outcome by 100. In short:(Likes+comments+saves) / followers x 100
Would you like to calculate your engagement rate for your profile? Use the same method as above for your latest 9 – 12 posts. Add all your engagement rates, and divide them by the number of posts.
4 Tips to increase your engagement.
Did you just find out your engagement rate is not as high as you would like? Then the next 4 tips might be useful to you!
1) Reply to every Instagram DM and comments on your post. Your followers are already actively seeking out to you, so don’t let them hang! When you reward this type of behaviour, your followers will interact more often.
2) Write valuable and sincere comments on other posts. When others see that you take time to write a comment on their post, others will return the favour.
3) Create valuable content. The more value you share, the more likely people are to save or share this content.
4) Use the interactive elements in Instagram Stories. This enables your following to interact with you in a super easy way. With one click on a button, they participated in your poll. Easy-peasy, right!?
Engagement is (unfortunately) something you have to put energy into, and work hard for it. Do you already make enough time to work on your engagement?
